We made arrangements for our three kids to be looked after and booked a hotel. My wife and I, having bought our tickets as soon as we heard Madonna was to appear locally in Charlotte, have been excited to see her all year. The night arrived, we travelled the 3 hours to Charlotte, checked into our hotel, and got ready for the exciting evening.
The concert was supposed to start at 8pm, but then we heard from another couple that the start would be delayed until 9:30pm. I checked with a staff member at the venue entrance that this was true, and it was confirmed. Although this was disappointing, we decided to make the most of it and, along with hundreds of other people, set off into Charlotte downtown to find dinner.
I haven't seen my wife so excited for some time. The atmosphere was electric, there were lots of people in our hotel bar who were obviously getting ready to go to the concert. We walked a long way, in the freezing cold, to find somewhere that wasn't full to capacity and eventually got something to eat. We ate quickly, all the time thinking we must get back to the venue for 9:30...
At 9:20, we got to the concert and proceeded to find our seats. People seemed to be excited to see Madonna and generally it seemed that we were going to be in for a good time! The atmosphere was ok with a DJ playing some pumping tracks to warm up the crowd.
The DJ stopped playing at 9:30 (ish) and the crowd grew excited. Over the course of the next hour and a half (!) things went south. We had to listen to canned musak and at the end of each track the crowd looked for Megan Hilty to start her set. My wife fell asleep. The atmosphere was tanking. Eventually at 11pm Madonna made her entrance. By that time we just felt angry.
Not one word was said regarding the delay. No apology, no explanation. If you think that this is acceptable, well, that's up to you. We don't.
